Jackman: An Independent Spirit

Located near bustling Borough Market, AMD was delighted to create Jackman’s first UK store – which is the second bricks-and-mortar space occupied by the brand. Using their Tokyo-based flagship store as inspiration, our aim was to create a similar feeling of an independent shop with an independent spirit.
Jackman was founded in 1949 by American baseball fan Mitsugu Tanabe. Starting with the production of baseball stockings, he soon expanded his manufacturing into uniforms and mitts for the fledging Japanese baseball team.

We created bespoke, handmade fixtures which nod to the game, including a white leather table with red stitching.

Jackman is now widely regarded as a pioneer of the baseball scene in Japan, so this was integral to our design. We created bespoke, handmade fixtures which nod to the game, including a white leather table with red stitching. We also sourced smaller novelty items, like old baseball stickers, to continue the visual thread.

We used reclaimed timber for the shelving and adorned them with lots of stock, plants and items which reference the manufacturing process, such as a Union Special sewing machine. This is the same piece of equipment they use to make the product in Japan, giving customers a real insight to the brands craft. Finally, we took the opportunity to make the fitting room an experience. Red plastic spectator seats line up on a concrete plinth. Above this, we placed a shelf full of Japanese baseball memorabilia, which is reminiscent of the Tokyo store.
