We designed and built everything from scratch – including the first floor, which we created to echo the original shape of the galleried church. The focal point of our structural efforts is the stunning bi-helical stairs that sweep down from the first floor to the ground. As a result, we were able to design a form which visually referenced blowing rods (tools used to sculpt and shape glass). We designed the rods to act as plinths to present the glassware at eye level. We began by installing a skylight on the first floor of the central Victorian building, which allowed natural light to flood though to darker spaces. We removed the false lowered ceilings and restored the original cornice, as well as the natural timber flooring. With the shell of the space restored or improved, we began creating truly bespoke features for the store, starting with a ‘meeting tree’ which soars up through the central void. We installed a bench around the tree for shoppers to sit and enjoy this striking talking point. The highlight of the project, which was featured as a benchmark project on Mary Portas’s TV show ‘Mary Queen of Shops’, was a series of fun and immersive changing rooms reminiscent of Narnia. We transformed a huge unused space into a characterful corridor with mismatched wardrobes either side. The changing rooms, which were inside the wardrobes, all took on a different, dedicated theme – from a 1950s kitchen to what could be your dad’s garden shed. At the end of the corridor was a ‘magic mirror’, where shoppers could take pictures of themselves and send to friends for advice. Inside, we installed a large, wrought iron staircase to replace the original (unsafe) staircase, which allowed light to flood in from above floors. Across the main space we opted for dusty pink and lime green tones, combined with the existing herringbone floorboards. This gave us entirely different parameters to work within, as the space took on a raw and industrial feel. We softened the look with reclaimed parquet flooring and a neutral colour pallet. Lastly, we installed a series of floating walls made from various textures. These visual assets provide an interesting background to the space whilst reflecting the building architecture style. All fixtures and fittings were designed and made by AMD from mixed materials; raw steel, brass, plywood and solid oak. Inspired by the Eden Project’s large Biomes, the structure invited visitors to walk through the green canopy and reflect on our collective responsibility in living together under one canopy. The dome was planted by two horticulturalists affiliated with the Eden Project. On either side of the dome, on tall metal rods evocative of glassblowing pipes, we displayed a selection of LSA’s longest-standing pieces - which demonstrate a belief in creating timeless objects that endure in form and function. They would then hand in their shoes and mobile phone through a hatch in the wall. This initial area was dark and quiet, purposefully designed for de-connection with think black felt adorning the floors and ceiling. In the next space, we installed an undulating mud floor which was hard on the foot, but smooth. We positioned a large haystack with steps up it to invite guests to rest and relax. Visitors were invited to weave a small piece of the rug being made before moving on. Next, visitors passed through an area for cleansing with a tap, bucket and ladle, as you might find in a Japanese temple. They would then hand in their shoes and mobile phone through a hatch in the wall. This initial area was dark and quiet, purposefully designed for de-connection with think black felt adorning the floors and ceiling. In the next space, we installed an undulating mud floor which was hard on the foot, but smooth. We positioned a large haystack with steps up it to invite guests to rest and relax. Visitors were invited to weave a small piece of the rug being made before moving on. Next, visitors passed through an area for cleansing with a tap, bucket and ladle, as you might find in a Japanese temple. As a result, we were able to design a form which visually referenced blowing rods (tools used to sculpt and shape glass). We designed the rods to act as plinths to present the glassware at eye level. To further nod to the industrial making process, we constructed the entire frame using raw steel. Inspired by the Eden Project’s large Biomes, the structure invited visitors to walk through the green canopy and reflect on our collective responsibility in living together under one canopy. The dome was planted by two horticulturalists affiliated with the Eden Project. On either side of the dome, on tall metal rods evocative of glassblowing pipes, we displayed a selection of LSA’s longest-standing pieces - which demonstrate a belief in creating timeless objects that endure in form and function.
