A Refined Return:

49 George Street, Edinburgh

Following the successful design of the flagship store at 89 George Street in 2010, AMD Interior Architecture was delighted to return to Edinburgh’s iconic George Street to shape the next chapter at number 49. Set within a listed building, the design embraces and preserves original architectural details while introducing a more refined and contemporary sensibility.

the brief

To create a light, contemporary retail environment that respects the building’s original architectural features while offering a fresh and inviting space tailored to both menswear and womenswear.

The space benefits from an abundance of natural daylight, which is amplified through the use of high ceilings, rooflights, and carefully considered material choices. Dark blue walls form a dramatic yet elegant backdrop for the vibrant colours of the womenswear collection, allowing the clothing to take visual precedence within the airy, gallery-like setting.

Menswear is located on the upper floor, where a lower ceiling height is balanced by lighter-toned walls. This thoughtful shift in palette creates contrast and clarity, helping darker garments stand out in a more intimate and focused environment.

Reclaimed parquet flooring runs throughout the space, bringing warmth and tactility while reinforcing the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Overall, the design prioritises openness and ease, resulting in a store that feels both timeless and contemporary — a welcoming destination for both loyal customers and new visitors.
